What is the difference between mini-SATA and mini-PCIe?

A mini-SATA (mSATA) SSD is similar in size and appearance to a mini-PCIe (mPCIe) card, and both can be installed in the same mPCIe slot on the motherboard. However, because of the same size and form factor, the two can be confused.

The mPCIe card can be used to connect wireless adapters for laptops and mobile devices, solid-state device storage, and other expansion modules. While mPCIe uses PCI Express signals suitable for desktop expansion cards, mSATA uses the SATA storage bus interface and must be connected directly to a SATA host controller.

The mPCIe card supports both PCIe and Universal Serial Bus (USB) signals.
